A Little Corvette Engine History….
Zora Arkus-Duntov. Corvette’s first chief of engineering also turned out to be every Corvette racer’s best friend. Beginning in ‘57 with the RPO 684 “heavy Duty Racing Suspension” and the famous Fuel-Injected 283 small-block, Zora made sure that if a customer wanted to race his Corvette, “Well, come on back to the Parts Department, son.” And since Duntov always wanted “more,” Corvette owners got more of what made the Corvette a Corvette – PLENTY of GRUNT!
The ‘53 Blue Flame Six was a lowly but gallant beginning and as the decades rolled on we were treated to an amazing array of fuel injected engines, big-block monster motors, the jewel-like, double-overhead cam LT5 (ZR1), the return of the LT-1, the 427 small-block LS7 that packs 500 “net” horsepower, and the latest Corvette power-monger, the supercharger LS7 that powers the amazing C6 ZR1. Not even Duntov was thinking superchargers back in the early days.
Yes, Zora Arkus-Duntov set the pattern that successor Corvette Chief Engineers Dave McLellan, Dave Hill, and Tadge Juechter have followed by always taking car of Corvette warriors.
Corvette owners usually get the same three questions: 1. “What year is your Vette?” 2. “How fast is it?” and 3. “What’s under the hood?” So with that in mind, lets open some hoods and have a drool, er, ah, drive down memory lane as we stroll through the “Corvette Engine Hall of Fame”
